Jetskiing for Beginners

Jetskiing for Beginners

Your guide to making waves with confidence GFG style.

There’s nothing like the thrill of cutting across the water on a jet ski, wind in your face, sun on your back, and nothing but good vibes ahead. If you're new to the world of jet skiing, don’t worry. We’ve got the essentials to help you ride like a pro, stay safe, and most importantly have fun.

Whether you're testing the waters for the first time or just looking for a confidence boost, here’s your go-to GFG guide to jet skiing for beginners.

1. Start with the Right Jet Ski

Before you even hit the throttle, make sure you’re riding a beginner-friendly jet ski. Look for models labeled “Recreational” or “Recreation-Lite” that are lightweight, easy to steer, and offer great stability. These are perfect for new riders learning the ropes.

💡 GFG Tip: Don’t be afraid to ask for help at your rental or dealership. The right machine makes all the difference!

2. Suit Up

Safety (and style) first. A U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket is non-negotiable. Sunglasses with a strap, gloves, and a wetsuit or rash guard can also keep you protected and comfortable. And yes, don't forget sunscreen.

3. Master Your Stance

Balance is everything when you’re on the water. Start by standing with your feet shoulder-width apart and slightly bent knees. Keep your weight centered and your eyes on the horizon, not down at the handlebars.

💡 Pro Tip: New riders often grip too tightly, relax those arms! It’ll help you stay in control and avoid fatigue.

4. Throttle Smoothly

The throttle is your best friend, BUT only if you respect it. Jet skis don’t have brakes, so you’ll want to ease into the gas and release it early when slowing down. Practice accelerating gradually and getting a feel for how your ski reacts.

5. Turning & Handling

Turning on a jet ski is all about balance and momentum. To make a smooth turn:

  • Look where you want to go.

  • Lean into the turn slightly with your body.

  • Keep a steady throttle slowing down mid-turn can cause you to lose control.

6. Ride Smart, Ride Safe

Stay in designated areas, keep an eye out for other riders and boats, and always respect no-wake zones. Riding solo? Let someone know your plans beforehand.

7. Have Fun and Be Fearless

Every pro started as a beginner. You will get splashed. You might fall off. But that’s all part of the fun. Climb back on, laugh it off, and send it again.
