Skateboarding is making its sports debut at the Tokyo Olympics this summer — alongside surfing, sport climbing, karate, and freestyle BMX.

Air. Carve. Grind. Female skateboarders have been essential to the growth of skateboarding as a sport.

The 24-year-old Dew Skate Team and Team USA street skater, Mariah Duran, is currently ranked No. 1 among U.S. women's street skaters and No. 7 globally — on her way to an official bid for this summer's Tokyo Olympics.

When asked about the Summer Olympics, Duran stated, "I think [this Olympic qualifier] is more pressure than a regular contest, but it is also sick because it is the first one in the U.S. and I am out here trying to represent by doing my best. You want to think about it mellow, but when you do the practices, everyone is super hungry. At a certain point, you have to take it a little more seriously."

Who is Mariah Duran?

Professional skateboarder Mariah Duran joined the DEW® team in January of 2019. MTN DEW® welcomed the first female professional skateboarder to its roster of action sports athletes.

As the only girl in her family, Mariah grew up challenging her brothers on the skateboard. She grew up skateboarding with her older brother, Elijah, and her younger brother, Zeke while quarantining in New Mexico over the last year.

Duran has been showcasing her talents at major skateboarding competitions around the world. "Skateboarding accepts everybody and being in the Olympics will make the sport even more accessible across gender, racial and socioeconomic lines. I say this all the time now and I really mean it: at the end of the day when I'm on my board, I'm just a skateboarder at that point. I'm not a boy or a girl; gender doesn't matter. And I feel like that's really beautiful. Showing that to the world is really amazing."
